MIHAS Participants Identify Prospects within the Growing Halal Industry

The fifteenth edition of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase was organized between 4 and 5 April 2018. The event which has become a destination for business organisations and individuals from many countries around the world was launched by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in the presence of a large number of ministers and government officials from Malaysia and other countries.

MIHAS 2018 was organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in conjunction with the World Halal Week which also consists of the 10th World Halal Conference, organised by the Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), and the 9th International Halal Certification Bodies Convention organised by the Department of Islamic Religion Malaysia (JAKIM). According to the statistics published by the organisers, MIHAS recorded over USD 4 billion in cumulative trade for its participants, which makes it one of the world’s largest Halal tradeshows.

MIHAS 2018 hosted more than 800 exhibitors from 36 countries including Turkey, Palestine, Iran, the UAE, China, Japan and Taiwan. In addition to the exhibition several other activities took place at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITECH) including one-to-one meetings between suppliers and hosted buyers under the International Sourcing Programme (INSP), Halal Trade Finance Conference, Halal In Travel Conference by CresentRating, MyPitch by Bioeconomy Corporation and many more.

MIHAS 2018 awarded some of the participants from different industries and countries for their record of excellence and innovation. The awards were given away by the CEO of MATRADE Ir Dr Mohd Shahreen Zainooreen B. Madros. He emphasised the importance of to acknowledge the companies that innovate. “Today’s business is powered by innovation and creativity. We must embrace new technologies and innovation in order to be successful globally. While we stay focused on existing business, we also need to strive for excellence and innovate to stay ahead and to be different,” he said.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges from MATRADE, the National Innovation Agency Malaysia, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), SIRIM Berhard, University of Malaya and Malaysia Design Council. The selection of winners was made based on the originality, innovation elements, appearance and relations to Halal. The presentation of MIHAS Awards started in 2012 as a form of appreciation for the efforts made by the participants in adopting innovation in their Halal products and services. In addition, awards for the best booth design and best country pavilion were granted.

MIHAS is an annual 4-day trade exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. MIHAS is hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), and is organised by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE). For the second years, the event is managed by HW Lima Sdn Bhd has an extensive experience of more than 20 years in organising and managing trade events. Both the local and international participants and visitors were satisfied with the organisation and outcomes of MIHAS 2018, with promises from the organisers to continue to improve in the years to come.
