Indonesia’s Tourism Sector Records Strong Growth in 2026

Indonesia’s tourism sector is maintaining strong growth in 2026, supported by rising international arrivals, higher tourism earnings and continued efforts to expand the country’s appeal across global markets.

The country welcomed 4.68 million international tourists between January and April 2026, representing an 8.24 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, according to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS). Tourism revenue also continued to rise, reaching US$4.05 billion in the first quarter, up 6.30 per cent year-on-year.

The performance reflects the growing importance of tourism to Indonesia’s wider economy. The government has been working to increase international arrivals while ensuring that tourism growth generates greater benefits for communities and businesses across the country.

Tourism promotion has been an important part of this strategy. Indonesia has expanded international marketing activities through sales missions, business-matching programmes, industry forums and international exhibitions. Recent promotional campaigns have targeted important markets including China, South Korea, India and Malaysia.

The government is also placing greater emphasis on regional destinations and events. Under the 2026 Karisma Event Nusantara programme, 125 selected events across Indonesia’s 38 provinces are being promoted to attract visitors and stimulate local economic activity. An assessment of 23 events held by the end of June recorded 1.34 million visitors and Rp90.53 billion in direct economic transactions.

The sector’s contribution extends beyond international tourism. Domestic travellers remain a major source of spending for local businesses, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises. Tourism expenditure by domestic visitors reached approximately Rp1,954 trillion, supporting businesses involved in accommodation, transportation, food and beverages, handicrafts and other local products.

Indonesia’s strong tourism performance in 2026 therefore reflects more than an increase in visitor numbers. Through international promotion, regional events and stronger links with local businesses, the country is seeking to turn tourism into a broader source of employment, investment and economic opportunity.

With its diverse natural and cultural attractions and a growing international visitor base, Indonesia is strengthening its position as one of Asia’s leading tourism destinations while expanding the sector’s contribution to national and local economic growth.
