Uzbekistan debuts in international organizations

In June 2024 Uzbekistan was elected to the UN Economic and Social Council as well as Administrative Council of the International Labor Organization for the first time in the history of independent nation.

UN Economic and Social Council. On June 7, elections for members of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2025-2027 took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

Based on the results of a secret ballot, the Republic of Uzbekistan received 185 votes from UN member states and, for the first time in its history, was elected to ECOSOC for the specified term.

The election of our country to this key UN body is the evidence of widespread recognition by the international community and member states of the United Nations of the progressive reforms carried out under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in all spheres.

It should be noted that ECOSOC is the main body of the UN, which is responsible for coordinating the economic and social activities of the Organization. The Council occupies a key place in the UN system for promoting all three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It consists of 54 states elected for a 3-year term.

Administrative Council of the International Labor Organization. As part of the 112th Session of the International Labor Conference at the ILO headquarters in Geneva, elections were held for members of the Organization’s Governing Body and their deputies for the period 2024-2027.

According to the voting results, Uzbekistan having received the largest number of votes (194 with the required minimum of 105), was elected to the ILO Administrative Council as a deputy member for the first time in its history.

ILO member states highly appreciate the determination and political will of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which led to the eradication of child and forced labor in the country, the ratification of a number of important ILO conventions in the field of promoting the principles of decent work, and the transition from a policy of ignoring problems to solving them through dialogue.

The Governing Body is the executive body of the ILO. It manages the work of the Organization in the period between sessions of the International Labor Conference and determines the procedure for implementing its decisions. Three sessions of the Administrative Council are held annually – in March, June, and November.

The Administrative Council consists of 56 members and 66 deputies, elected for three years.
