Miranda Harumal: It is a privilege for me to participate in this interview session with OIC Today. I have always been passionate about healthcare and it is fueled by the ambition to help and care for people, particularly ensuring that they receive the necessary medical services. This aspiration has been the driving force behind my career in the healthcare industry, which I have diligently served for the past 28 years.
I believe that working in the healthcare industry allows me to fulfill this dream of helping, nurturing and caring for people. I also aspire to make meaningful contributions to the community. Throughout my career, I have confronted novel challenges that have aided in my personal growth and development as a passionate healthcare professional.
The healthcare industry is immensely fulfilling and satisfying to me in numerous ways. Having worked in this industry for so long,I have been able to garner knowledge and evolve, which aligns with my lifelong aspirations. Resolving people’s issues when they visit the hospital is the most crucial and rewarding aspect of my job, and my passion for this has led me to dedicate myself to this field for a long time.
Overcoming challenges is a true indication of your potential for growth. One of the most vital attributes that employers look for in new team members is a willingness to learn new skills. Demonstrating an enthusiastic approach towards acquiring knowledge through the adoption of emerging technologies and dedicating oneself to personal and professional growth are crucial elements for achieving success in one’s career.
2. Can you tell us a little bit about the history and background of Ara Damansara Medical Centre (ADMC)? What was the founding vision of the Medical Centre?
Miranda Harumal: Ara Damansara Medical Centre (ADMC) opened its doors for healthcare services in January 2012, inaugurated by HRH Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj. It was the first standalone private facility in the region to specialize in heart, brain, spine, and joint-related ailments. The medical centre aimed to set a new benchmark in healthcare services, with the ultimate vision of becoming a gold standard healthcare provider in the region. Over time, the hospital has grown to become a multi-disciplinary medical and surgical facility that offers a diverse range of specializations, reinforced by cutting-edge Imaging, Diagnostic, Interventional, and Rehabilitation facilities and services. Our continued success is a testament to our unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare experiences. Moreover, in 2021, ADMC obtained full four-year accreditation from the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH). The Malaysian Hospital Accreditation Standards aims to promote ongoing, systematic improvement in an organization’s performance and the outcomes of care. MSQH accreditation ensures that we meet the highest standards in patient care, clinical governance, risk management, and continuous improvement. Miranda Harumal @ Nur Syahirah Abdullah: We offer specialized services in various fields such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, gastroenterology, urology, nephrology, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynecology, orthopedic, spine treatment, as well as 24-hrs Emergency and Trauma care.
Our cardiology department boasts advanced facilities for diagnostic and interventional procedures, including coronary angiograms and angioplasties. In the neurology department, we have a dedicated neurorehabilitation centre equipped with state-of-the-art technologies to provide optimal care to patients with neurological conditions.
Our gastroenterology department offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for a range of gastrointestinal conditions. The urology department has advanced facilities for urodynamic studies and minimally invasive surgeries for prostate and kidney-related conditions. As the demand for complete family care continues to increase, our future expansion plan includes comprehensive women and children's health services to complement our existing services.

7. How does ADMC ensure the quality of the healthcare services provided? In other words, which quality assurance authority certifies and evaluates the quality of service?
Miranda Harumal: ADMC has implemented a quality management system to evaluate and monitor the quality of services provided, in addition to the accreditations from MSQH and JCI. The Quality and Patient Safety Department is responsible for maintaining the system and identifying areas for improvement.
Furthermore, we have a Patient Feedback System in place, which allows patients to share their experiences and provide feedback on the services provided. This feedback is taken into consideration during the evaluation process and helps us improve the overall patient experience.
We are committed to quality assurance and improvement, as demonstrated by our participation in medical conferences and continuing medical education programs. These initiatives keep our medical staff up-to-date with the latest medical advancements and best practices.
8. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your Medical Centre, and how has it responded to the crisis? What strategy did you use to thrive strongly in the post-pandemic time?
Miranda Harumal: ADMC, like many other healthcare facilities, was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, we have taken several measures to prioritize the safety and well-being of its patients and staff.
Strict infection prevention and control protocols have been implemented, including visitor screening, social distancing measures, and the provision of personal protective equipment to all staff members. We have also established dedicated COVID-19 wards and isolation units to manage infected patients and prevent the spread of the virus.
During the pandemic, ADMC actively supported the government's efforts to vaccinate the population. The hospital was recognized as the exclusive healthcare partner for the COVID-19 vaccination drive-thru for the people with disabilities community, receiving full support from the Malaysian government.
ADMC, along with other private hospitals, also served as COVID-19 vaccination centres for adults and children. As a result of these efforts, ADMC was awarded the – “Vaccination Delivery of the Year” award from Health Care Asia 2023 for pioneering in COVID-19 vaccination for People with Disabilities (PWDs) which we are proud of.
