We mourn the passing of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, who passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025, at 7:10 p.m. at the National Heart Institute (IJN). He was 85. Affectionately known as "Pak Lah," he was a statesman who championed integrity, moderation, and human capital development.
Ascending to the premiership in 2003, Pak Lah led Malaysia through a period of political transition and reform. His administration emphasized transparency and anti-corruption measures, and he introduced the concept of Islam Hadhari, promoting a progressive and inclusive interpretation of Islam.
As Chairman of the 10th Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit, Tun Abdullah advocated for capacity-building initiatives among member states, addressing poverty and underdevelopment. He also highlighted the need to combat corruption within the Muslim world, urging collective action to tackle governance challenges.
Despite facing political challenges, including the 2008 general election setbacks, Pak Lah remained committed to his vision of a just and progressive Malaysia. After retiring from politics in 2009, he withdrew from public life, and in 2022, it was revealed that he was suffering from dementia.
Tun Abdullah is survived by his wife, Jeanne Abdullah, and his children and stepchildren. His legacy as a leader who prioritized compassion, development, and unity will be remembered by Malaysians and the broader Muslim's community.
