Malaysian weightlifter Muhammad Erry Hidayat won the men’s 79-kilogram title at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, securing his country’s third gold medal of the competition. The 26-year-old finished with a combined total of 331 kilograms. His performance included a 147-kilogram snatch and a 184-kilogram clean and jerk.

The clean-and-jerk result and his overall total both set new Commonwealth Games records. Muhammad Erry defeated India’s Valluri Ajaya Babu by a single kilogram after the Indian lifter recorded 149 kilograms in the snatch and 181 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 330. England’s Chris Murray earned bronze with 325 kilograms, made up of a 148-kilogram snatch and a 177-kilogram clean and jerk.

The gold was Muhammad Erry’s first Commonwealth Games title. At Birmingham 2022, he competed in the lighter 73-kilogram division and finished with a silver medal. His victory in Glasgow therefore represented both a move to a higher weight category and an improvement on his previous Games result.

The result also continued a family sporting achievement. His father, Hidayat Hamidon, won a Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medal when Kuala Lumpur hosted the event in 1998. Muhammad Erry’s success allowed him to repeat that accomplishment 28 years later.

Malaysia’s first two gold medals in Glasgow had also come from weightlifting. Mohamad Aniq Kasdan won the 60-kilogram category, while Muhamad Aznil Bidin took the 65-kilogram title on July 26. Muhammad Erry then added the third, reinforcing weightlifting’s major contribution to the national medal tally.
