Kazakhstan won two gold medals at the fifth Asian Para Games in Japan, with victories in shooting and powerlifting. Yerkin Gabbasov delivered the country’s first gold in the men’s 10-metre air rifle standing event, classified as R1. David Degtyarev followed with a record-setting performance in the powerlifting competition.
Gabbasov scored 249.1 points in the final, according to the National Olympic Committee’s press service on October 19, 2026. His result opened Kazakhstan’s gold-medal account at the Games. The shooting success was followed by another top podium finish in a different sport.
Degtyarev lifted 191 kilograms in the men’s up-to-54-kilogram category. The result established a new Asian Para Games record. Kazakhstan also earned a powerlifting silver through Tursynai Kabyl in the women’s up-to-41-kilogram competition, where she completed all three attempts and lifted 104 kilograms on her final effort.
The Games opened in Nagoya on October 18 and were scheduled to continue until October 24. Around 4,000 athletes from 45 Asian countries were taking part at venues across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya. Kazakhstan sent 150 athletes across 12 sports, including its first appearance in wheelchair tennis at the Games. Its delegation therefore combined established medal contenders with participation in a new sport this year.
